MICHAEL WILLIAMS
Director of Bands

Michael Williams is a graduate of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education and studied percussion performance and conducting with Dr. Robert Romine. From 1980 to 1986 he was The Director of Bands at Stedman Jr. High School and assistant director to Cape Fear High School. While at Stedman, he was chosen as the PTSA “Teacher of the Year”. From 1986 until 1989, he was The Director of Bands for Lumberton City Schools and from 1989 until 1996 he was employed as an educational representative with McFadyen Music Company. For the past 10 years, he has been the Director of Bands at Cape Fear High School in Fayetteville, NC.

Throughout his teaching career his Concert Bands have received Superior ratings and his students consistently place in the SEDBA All-District Band and North Carolina Honors Band. His “Marching Colts” have won numerous First Place awards and have been named Grand Champions at many marching band competitions.

He has been invited to be a guest clinician and conductor for numerous All-County and All-District Bands throughout North and South Carolina. He has served as the Chairperson for High School and Middle School Auditions and High School and Middle School Band Contest for the Southeastern District Band Directors Association where he currently holds the office of President. In 2000, he was a recipient of The North Carolina Bandmasters Association “Award of Excellence” and his Wind Ensemble performed at the 2003 and 2006 North Carolina Music Educators Conference.

"Mike" lives in Eastover, North Carolina with his wife Susan. They have two daughters, Terri and Alex.


 
 
CHRISTOPHER S. TURNER
Programs Coordinator/Designer

Chris has been teaching, designing, writing, consulting and adjudicating the pageantry arts for over 13 years across the continental United States. Mr. Turner carries an extremely diversified field of organizations, from Winterguards, Indoor Percussion Ensembles, Drum and Bugle Corps as well as Symphonic & Marching Ensembles. His zest and commitment to youth education and excellence is highlighted by his diversified experience and professionalism.

Born in Central North Carolina, Chris attended Western Carolina University as a Music Education Major and student of Dr. Kenneth Kroesche. Soon after Chris relocated to East Carolina University in Greenville, NC where he received his Bachelors. Chris attended South Granville High School in central NC from 1991-1995.

In 1997-2001 Chris joined the staff of, and became the Program Coordinator/Writer & Designer for West Carteret High School, of Morehead City, NC who have been active WGI Scholastic World Indoor Percussion Finalists from 1999-2001 as well as WGI Friendship Cup Champions / BOA Regional Finalists / and NCBDA Symphonic Grade Six Superiors for over 11 consecutive years. 

Chris has also has instructed the WGI Independent World Class; Carolina Thunder Percussion Ensemble from Charlotte, NC in 1999 and 2000. Currently Chris is on staff with both Tarpon Springs High School Outdoor Performance Ensemble and the Boston Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps where he will begin his sixth year as a Lead Visual Instructor with this DCI Finalist Corps. In addition Mr. Turner is an alumnus member of Kappa Kappa Psi Nationaly Honorary Music Service, and has served as a Chief Adjudicator for the NC Marching Band Contest series.
 
Chris now resides in Greenville, NC after relocating from the Greater Tampa Bay area. 
 
 
 
FRANK SULLIVAN
Music Composition/Arranger

Frank Sullivan was a member of the Star of Indiana organization from 1991 to 1993 and both a member and instructor with Star of Indiana's Brass Theater from 1994 to 1997. In 1998 he joined The Cadets' on Brass Staff, eventually assuming the Brass Caption Head role there in 1999. From 2001 to 2004 Sullivan toured with the Blast! serving as a performing soloist, the music manager, and the artistic supervisor. In 2004 he arranged the program for Boston Crusaders. His Drum Corps affiliations also include Carolina Crown & the Blue Stars. 
 
During the Spring of 2002 Frank met and joined Kevin Ford in collaboration with the South Korean Government to design the Opening Ceremonies for the FIFA World Cup! Since then he's been hard at work creating Inspire Music and Entertainment Productions, an arranging company based in Tampa Bay, Florida. 
 
 
COLIN McNUTT
Percussion Composition/Arranger

Colin has instructed and arranged for the Star of Indiana Drum and Bugle Corps, and the popular stage production, Blast!
 
He has also written for and instructed the Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps the Glassmen Drum and Bugle Corps and Magic of Orlando. Colin has served on the faculty of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where he is an alumnus and received degrees in Classics and Music Education.
 
Currently, he is the percussion caption supervisor for the Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps from Allentown, PA. McNutt has made a career out of his passion for music and percussion, while in between completing his double major of music education and classics from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1998. When not instructing drum corps, McNutt conducts clinics for the percussion companies Avedis Zildjian Co., REMO, Inc., and Vic Firth. He also writes music for marching bands in the United States and Japan.

Tom Aungst said about Colin's joining the team, "Colin has been involved with drum corps for many years and has proven himself to be a great writer and teacher. It is exciting to have someone on board that has the experience and teaching skills like Colin. This obviously will help the Cadet percussion program continue it's quest for excellence."

RON HARDIN
Drill Writer

Ron Hardin is the Director of Bands at Bellevue East High School, in Bellevue, NE. Previously, Ron served as Director of Bands at Clayton Valley High School in Concord, CA.

Ron’s drum and bugle corps experience is extensive. Currently, he is the Visual Coordinator for the Blue Stars and a member of the DCI Task Force. Before his current position, Ron served as the Visual Caption head of the Santa Clara Vanguard for six seasons. Prior to his involvement with SCV, he was a visual instructor at the Concord Blue Devils for eight award-winning seasons. His additional drum corps experience includes involvement with Velvet Knights, Star of Indiana, and Allegiance Elite. Ron has designed shows for Yamato, Pride of the Lions, Magic of Orlando and Minnesota Brass.

Ron is also the past conductor and founder of the Diablo Wind Symphony. He has judged marching band competitions and percussion contests around the country and has been actively involved as an adjudicator’s trainer in his home state.

Hardin has designed shows for numerous high schools, colleges, drum corps, winter guards, winter percussion lines and marching bands. Currently Ron is affiliated with Creative Solutions, based in Idaho. His involvement with Winter Guard International is extensive, serving as a marching percussion adjudicator and as a former Director of The Friendship Cup. Ron has also produced an instructional video for use with high school marching bands.

Ron has served as President of the Contra Costa County Band Director’s Association and Vice-President and Contest Coordinator of the Western Band Association. He was the recipient of the Jack R. Snyder Young Band Director’s Award. When his is not teaching or conducting, Ron finds time to play bass trombone with several ensembles. Ron’s greatest pride and joy is his family, his wife Molly, and their daughters Emma and Celeste. 
 
 
                                                                                                                                                   
 

BRANDON HULTS - Lead

Brandon graduated from West Carteret High School in 2003 after a highly diverse four years with their Wind Ensemble, WGI Scholastic World Percussion Ensemble, BOA Regional Finalist Marching Band and various solo/ensemble jazz ventures.  Brandon is a sought after Pianist, Trombonist, Violinist and composer/conductor.

 

Since his time at West Carteret High School, Mr. Hults has been pursuing his bachelors degree in Music Education as a NC Teaching Fellow from East Carolina University where he is currently in his Senior year of study under the direction of Dr. Scott Carter (ECU Wind Ensemble Conductor). Brandon was a brass member of the DCI World Finalist Boston Crusaders Drum & Bugle Corps during the 2004 season where he gained a wealth of knowledge in the marching arts activity. In 2006/2007 Brandon was a performing member of the WGI - Independent Open finalist; First Flight winterguard out of Cary, NC.

 

Brandon is a proud member of Kappa Kappa Psi, MENC, and other music education affiliated organizations. After graduation Brandon plans on pursuing his masters and doctoral degrees in conducting.
